Advanced Corneal Diagnostics
in Alexandria, Egypt

Pentacam scanning in Alexandria, corneal epithelial mapping and Anterior Segment OCT — tests that help assess the shape and thickness of the cornea and the details of the front of the eye. They are requested when needed and according to each patient's case, alongside the clinical examination. Pentacam · Corneal Epithelial Mapping · Anterior Segment OCT — Alexandria, Egypt

Advanced Corneal Tests Before Choosing a Treatment

The technology that helps us make more precise treatment decisions

Assessing the cornea is not based on your eyesight measurement or prescription alone.

At the clinic, advanced tests are available to help assess the shape and thickness of the cornea, the distribution of the epithelium and the details of the front of the eye — particularly when evaluating keratoconus, irregular corneas, and before certain LASIK and vision correction procedures.

Pentacam — Advanced Corneal MappingPentacam · Corneal Tomography

A Pentacam scan provides detailed information about the shape, curvature and thickness of the cornea, together with advanced analysis of corneal maps.

It helps with:

  • Assessing corneal shape and curvature
  • Measuring corneal thickness and its distribution
  • Evaluating the front and back surfaces of the cornea
  • Helping detect abnormal or suspicious patterns
  • Assessing the cornea before certain vision correction procedures
  • Helping evaluate and monitor keratoconus

The decision to have LASIK or any other vision correction procedure does not depend on your prescription alone, but on a comprehensive assessment of the cornea, the eye and your general health.

Epithelial Mapping — Corneal Epithelial Thickness MapCorneal Epithelial Mapping

Imaging and analysis of the distribution and thickness of the epithelial layer on the corneal surface. It can provide additional information in certain cases that need a more detailed assessment.

It provides additional information in:

  • Cases with suspected corneal irregularity
  • The assessment of some keratoconus cases
  • Irregular corneas
  • Some cases after corneal surgery
  • Cases that need more information in addition to standard tests

The appropriate test is chosen according to each patient's case — not every patient necessarily needs all of the tests.

Anterior Segment OCT — Cross-Sectional Imaging of the Front of the EyeAnterior Segment OCT

An optical coherence tomography technique that produces detailed images of the cornea and the front of the eye, providing additional information in cases that need a more precise anatomical assessment.

It helps with:

  • Assessing the cornea
  • Assessing corneal thickness when needed
  • Studying the details of the front of the eye
  • Helping evaluate certain corneal and ocular surface conditions
  • Cases that require detailed cross-sectional imaging

The OCT device available at the clinic is the Dream OCT / OCT Angio, and the appropriate scan protocol is chosen for each patient after the consultation.

Why Might You Need More Than One Corneal Test?

No single test is right for every case.

Some patients may need a Pentacam scan, while others may need Epithelial Mapping, Anterior Segment OCT or other tests, depending on their case.

Our aim is not to perform as many tests as possible, but to perform the right test for the right patient when there is a genuine medical need for it.

Results of advanced tests are interpreted together with the clinical examination, medical history, refraction measurements and all other relevant medical information — and they are interpreted by Prof. Amr Ahmed Said, Consultant in Corneal & Refractive Surgery and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University.

In some cases, assessing the ocular surface and dry eye is part of the complete picture — see dry eye diagnosis and treatment to learn more.

Vision correction assessment

  1. Vision and refraction test
  2. Corneal assessment
  3. Advanced tests when needed
  4. Determining suitability and choosing the right technique

Keratoconus assessment

  1. Clinical examination
  2. Pentacam
  3. Epithelial Mapping or additional tests when needed
  4. Evaluating the case and setting a monitoring or treatment plan

These steps are for illustration only and are not a mandatory sequence for every patient — the steps and the type of test required may vary from case to case, based on the medical assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions About Corneal Tests

What is a Pentacam scan and what role does it play in assessing the cornea?
A Pentacam scan provides detailed information about the shape, curvature and thickness of the cornea, together with advanced analysis of corneal maps. It is read in conjunction with the clinical examination, refraction measurements and other medical information, and is never used on its own to decide the treatment plan.
Do I need a Pentacam scan before LASIK?
The decision to have LASIK or any other vision correction procedure does not depend on your prescription alone, but on a comprehensive assessment of the cornea, the eye and your general health. Corneal tests before LASIK are requested when medically needed and according to each patient's case.
What is the difference between epithelial mapping and standard corneal maps?
Corneal epithelial mapping images and analyzes the distribution and thickness of the epithelial layer on the surface of the cornea. It can provide additional information in certain cases that need a more detailed assessment, such as irregular corneas and some cases of keratoconus.
Does every patient need all of the corneal tests?
No single test is right for every case, and not every patient necessarily needs all of the tests. The appropriate test is chosen according to each patient's case and when there is a medical need for it.
