Advanced Corneal Diagnostics Before Choosing Treatment
Technology that helps us make more precise treatment decisions

Assessing the cornea is not just about measuring your prescription or how weak your vision is.

Our clinic offers advanced tests that help evaluate the shape of the cornea, its thickness, epithelial distribution and the details of the front part of the eye — especially when assessing keratoconus, irregular corneas, and before certain vision correction procedures.

Pentacam — Advanced Corneal MappingPentacam · Corneal Tomography

The Pentacam provides detailed information about the shape, curvature and thickness of the cornea, along with advanced analysis of corneal maps.

  • Evaluating the shape and curvature of the cornea
  • Measuring corneal thickness and its distribution
  • Assessing the front and back surfaces of the cornea
  • Helping detect abnormal or suspicious patterns
  • Assessing the cornea before certain vision correction procedures
  • Helping evaluate and monitor keratoconus

The decision to have LASIK or any other vision correction procedure is not based on your prescription alone, but on a comprehensive assessment of the cornea, the eye and the patient's overall health.

Epithelial Mapping — Corneal Epithelial Thickness MapCorneal Epithelial Mapping

Imaging and analysis of the distribution and thickness of the epithelial layer on the corneal surface, which can provide additional information in cases that call for a more detailed assessment.

  • Suspected corneal irregularity
  • Evaluation of certain keratoconus cases
  • Irregular corneas
  • Some cases after corneal surgery
  • Cases that need additional information beyond standard tests

The right test is chosen according to each patient's condition — not every patient needs every test.

Anterior Segment OCT — Imaging of the Front of the EyeAnterior Segment OCT

A cross-sectional imaging technique that provides detailed images of the cornea and the front part of the eye, offering additional information in cases that require a more precise anatomical assessment.

  • Corneal assessment
  • Measuring corneal thickness when needed
  • Studying the details of the front part of the eye
  • Helping evaluate certain diseases of the cornea and ocular surface
  • Cases that require detailed cross-sectional imaging

The OCT scanner available at our center is the Dream OCT / OCT Angio, and the appropriate scanning program is chosen according to each patient's condition after the consultation.

Why might we need more than one corneal test?

No single test is right for every case.

Some patients may need a Pentacam, while others may need Epithelial Mapping, Anterior Segment OCT or other tests depending on their condition.

Our aim is not to perform as many tests as possible, but to perform the right test for the right patient when there is a medical need for it.

Results of advanced tests are interpreted together with the clinical examination, medical history, refraction measurements and all other relevant medical information — and they are interpreted by Prof. Amr Ahmed Said, consultant cornea and refractive surgeon and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University.

For vision correction assessment

  1. Vision testing
  2. Corneal assessment
  3. Advanced tests when needed
  4. Determining suitability and choosing the right technique

For keratoconus assessment

  1. Clinical examination
  2. Pentacam
  3. Epithelial Mapping or additional tests when needed
  4. Assessing the condition and setting a follow-up or treatment plan

These steps are for illustration only and are not a mandatory sequence for every patient — the steps and the type of test required may vary from one case to another based on the medical assessment.

Dry Eye Treatment
Dry Eye Treatment
IPL and Rexon-Eye dry eye treatment devices at Prof. Amr Said's center
The latest dry eye diagnosis and treatment technology in Alexandria
What is modern dry eye treatment with IPL and Rexon-Eye?

It is an advanced treatment that targets the main cause of dryness (blocked oil glands in the eyelids), using intense pulsed light and molecular resonance to melt the secretions and stimulate the glands. This improves tear quality and provides long-lasting relief.

Are lubricating eye drops enough to treat dry eye?

Eye drops only provide temporary lubrication without removing the cause of the blocked oil glands. IPL and Rexon-Eye treatment tackles the root of the problem and reduces constant reliance on drops.

Is it suitable for dry eye after LASIK?

Yes, it is an effective and safe option for treating dry eye symptoms that may appear or worsen after vision correction surgery.

🔬
Keratoconus
Keratoconus
Corneal topography (mapping) device for diagnosing keratoconus at Prof. Amr Said's center
Precise diagnosis with the latest corneal mapping devices
What is keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a progressive disease of the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye), in which the cornea gradually thins and changes from its normal dome shape into a cone shape. This leads to weaker vision, blurred vision and increasing astigmatism.

What causes keratoconus?
  • Hereditary factors and genetic predisposition.
  • Constant eye rubbing (especially in patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis / spring catarrh).
  • Chronic eye allergies.
  • Sleeping face-down or putting direct pressure on the eye.
What are the symptoms of keratoconus?
  • Increasingly weak vision, even with glasses.
  • Blurred or double vision.
  • Frequent, rapid changes in glasses or contact lens prescriptions.
  • Glare and haziness, especially when driving at night.
How is keratoconus treated?

Treatment depends on the stage:

✅ Early stages Corneal cross-linking (CXL): a non-surgical procedure that strengthens the collagen fibers of the cornea and helps halt the progression of the disease in most suitable cases. At our center we use high-quality American riboflavin solution to achieve the best possible result.
✅ Intermediate stages Specialty contact lenses (scleral / hybrid lenses) — all types are available at our center so we can trial the best fit for each case. If rigid contact lenses are not tolerated, intracorneal ring segments can be implanted with the femtosecond laser to regularize the surface and reduce astigmatism.
✅ Advanced stages Partial (lamellar) corneal transplantation in late-stage cases, which carries a very low risk of rejection.
What does Prof. Amr Said offer for keratoconus treatment?
  • Extensive experience in diagnosing and treating corneal diseases.
  • Use of the latest cross-linking and ring implantation techniques.
  • Close follow-up of patients to monitor corneal stability and detect any change early.
  • Broad experience with thousands of cases from Egypt, Libya and the Gulf.
〰️
Astigmatism
Astigmatism
What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a refractive error caused by an irregular corneal surface, resulting in blurred vision or double images.

What are the symptoms of astigmatism?
  • Frequent headaches.
  • Blurred vision both near and far.
  • Difficulty seeing at night.
How is astigmatism treated?
  • Prescription glasses.
  • Specialty contact lenses.
  • Laser procedures (LASIK / FemtoLASIK / SMILE).
  • Implantable lenses inside the eye (ICL) for high degrees.
Why is follow-up with Prof. Amr Said recommended?
  • Experience in diagnosing and treating all degrees of astigmatism.
  • Use of the latest laser and lens technologies.
  • Personal, meticulous follow-up for every case.

15 Key Facts About LASIK
LASIK · Questions & Answers
1️⃣ Can every vision problem be treated with laser?

❌ No — the cornea must be examined first. Some eyes are excellent candidates for laser, and others are not.

2️⃣ Does laser weaken the eyes later on?

❌ No — when it is done correctly on the right candidate, it is very safe.

3️⃣ Is laser eye surgery painful?

Usually not — any discomfort is mild and temporary, and modern technology has made the whole process much easier.

4️⃣ Can I have laser surgery if I have dry eye?

Sometimes — but the condition must be assessed and the dryness treated first.

5️⃣ Can glasses treat keratoconus?

❌ No — glasses only improve vision; they do not stop the disease.

6️⃣ What is corneal cross-linking?

✅ A procedure that halts corneal deterioration and preserves your existing vision.

7️⃣ Why does vision get worse quickly in young people?

⚠️ It could be keratoconus, and early diagnosis is very important.

8️⃣ Is all blurred vision caused by a refractive error?

❌ No — sometimes the cause is a corneal problem.

9️⃣ Can I have laser surgery on just one eye?

✅ Yes, it is possible — depending on the case and the doctor's assessment.

🔟 Can I stop wearing glasses after vision correction?

🤔 Dependence on glasses may drop considerably after surgery in suitable cases, but results vary from person to person and depend on the condition of the eye and cornea and the type of procedure. Safety always comes first.

1️⃣1️⃣ Which is better… surface laser (PRK) or Femto-LASIK?

✅ There is no "better" — there is what suits each eye best.

1️⃣2️⃣ Can I have laser surgery if I am under 18?

❌ Usually not — your prescription must be stable first.

1️⃣3️⃣ Does vision get weaker again after laser?

🤏 Rarely — and it usually happens when the prescription was not stable before the procedure.

1️⃣4️⃣ Are implantable lenses better than laser?

✅ For some people — especially with very high prescriptions.

1️⃣5️⃣ When should I worry and see a doctor immediately?

🚨 Sudden blurring, flashes or hazy vision, or persistent headaches — do not put these off.

👓
14 Key Facts About Glasses and Contact Lenses
Glasses & Contact Lenses
1️⃣ Does changing glasses often harm the eyes?

✅ No — but if you keep needing new glasses, we need to find out why.

2️⃣ Do the wrong glasses hurt your eyes?

❌ They don't weaken your eyes — but they cause headaches, eye strain and blurred vision.

3️⃣ Can I wear someone else's glasses?

🚫 No — every eye has a different prescription.

4️⃣ Do glasses make your eyesight worse?

❌ No — they simply make your vision clearer; they do not change your eyes.

5️⃣ How do I know my glasses need changing?

⚠️ Headaches, blurry vision or tired eyes — it's time for an eye exam.

6️⃣ Are contact lenses more dangerous than glasses?

🤔 Not necessarily — as long as they are worn correctly and cleaned properly.

7️⃣ Are contact lenses suitable for everyone?

❌ No — some corneal conditions are not suitable for regular lenses.

8️⃣ Can I sleep in my contact lenses?

🚫 No — this is one of the most common causes of eye infections.

9️⃣ Do contact lenses make your eyes look bigger or smaller?

❌ No — that is a widespread myth.

🔟 Are sunglasses important or just for looks?

☀️ They are important — especially to protect your eyes from UV rays if you are often exposed to sunlight.

1️⃣1️⃣ Do computer glasses protect your eyes?

✅ They reduce eye strain — but they do not prevent vision loss. What matters most is taking a break every 20 minutes.

1️⃣2️⃣ Are colored contact lenses safe?

⚠️ If they are medical-grade and used under supervision, they can be worn carefully — otherwise they are dangerous.

1️⃣3️⃣ Can contact lenses replace my glasses?

🤔 It depends on the case — they are not a solution for everyone, and lenses need proper care and careful handling.

1️⃣4️⃣ Can high prescriptions be corrected with contact lenses?

Sometimes — but the cornea must be assessed first.
